As you might have guessed from all the unlit melty candles, the cave used to be lit with candles, but someone at some point went through and strung up lights. That’s mighty nice of them!

I’m not sure why… but this page seems to be more… cartoony? Maybe it’s just panel 6 that’s giving that impression.
To me, the only thing that seem to have really changed is Michelle’s facial features. Things like her chin and nose are much less angular as compared to how she appeared in Homecoming.
You’re not the only one, Michelle’s face does seem a bit off-model.
^In panel six that is.
Although, Michelle’s face has been in flux for a while, partly because Kory mentioned she couldn’t decide what she was supposed to look like in sphinx form, the rest I’m going to blame on her being new to medallion magic.
When all else fails, blame magic.
Maybe it’s the high concentration of Excited Jim Face?
In certain high concentrations of excited Jim face the magic is powerful enough that it distorts all other faces around it into its image.
So apparently Jim’s related to Phineas the Red. And Phineas the Red had a daughter also named Phineas. I guess bizarre names run in the family.
Wait wait wait. His name was Phineas. His family name was Finn. He had red hair. PLEASE tell me I’m not the only one who immediately thought of Phineas and Ferb.
No, not at all
Also I think it’s worth noting that Ferb has green hair. :>
I thought of Phineas from The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. His hair is black… but he does have quite a beak on him! >:=)>
I doubt P. the Red was called Finn himself; it’s more likely the family’s named AFTER him— that is the Finns are the “children of Phineas.”
A Phineas Finn was also the title character of a novel written by Anthony Trollope in the 1860s. It wasn’t exactly a page-turner.
The entire Finn family is related to Phineas the Red.
But this is the first time we learn anything about Phineas II, his daughter, Phineas the Green.
I wonder what she did to make herself noteworthy in the family history?
I’m thinking get cursed.
More likely Phineas is a TITLE given to him and carried down by his family.
Perhaps he was an “oracle” or “a diligent observer. OR maybe Jim’s “snake mouth” runs in the family.
I mean, look at those fangs. And the family can all be pretty argumentative or “brassy” and “shatter” cohesion.
All of which Phineas can mean…
Admiring the man…uh, gryphon, is fine but playing around where his bones lay isn’t. Aren’t there tons of asbestos or some other disease?!
My cousins and I played hide and seek and the like in cemeteries pretty regularly when we were kids while the adults were paying respects to people we never met. This was south Louisiana of course, where cemeteries are mostly above-ground tombs.
asbestos you get from certain types of mineral dust in your lungs. My mother, who is a nurse, says you can;t catch anything from centuries old bones. you can catch things from mouse or bat poo if those live in your cave, but probably not if you are a gryphon.
Did you just imply that asbestos is a disease? O_o
Asbestos is not a disease–it is a mineral that is used as a fire-proofer in old buildings and ships. Inhaling its dust can cause lung cancer and a whole list of other issues. Its illegal to use today because its so toxic.
anyone else see the repeating texture in panel 1 or am I just crazy
yea, I think I see what you’re talking about. I’m pretty sure that’s just the result of how the page was colored in.
So exciting to have updates again!
I like the “inadequate underground lighting” look. Also, Jim you are always such a goof!
Nothing wrong with playing in the grave yard, When I was a kid I used to play in the cemetery every year after the local cemetery clean up. It was the ultimate community gathering place.
And yes Jim, did they have whatever it is you have?
Jim’s whatever-it-is has been called a curse, but there really hasn’t been evidence of it actually being a curse. Curses are supposed to be harmful. Maybe it’s not a curse, and is just a way of marking a person of importance to a prophecy…
Well, it’s only not harmful if the cursed is perfectly fine with being stuck with insanely long, abnormally colored hair that they’ll never be able to change, as well as being super tall.
Woooo, are we actually going to get some backstory on the curse?
What is the difference between a curse and a blessing, but what comes of it?
“Whatever it is you have?”
“That’s a broad topic. My handsome face? My sense of humor? My lovely eyes? My…”
“Your broccoli hair.”
“Nah, it’s more like spinach.”
– “Dah da-da-da-da da-daah,”
– “Dah da-da-da-da da-daah,”
= “Da da da da da da, da da da da da da-
Dah da-da-da-da da-daah!!”
The pair break down into laughter etc.
“So if I eat it, will I get super strength?”
“Girl, I had better not catch you trying to eat my hair!”
Michelle: Why not? It immediately grows back on you anyway.
Although I could more see Merial doing such a scene with Jim, rather than Michelle.
Now I have an image of Michelle, Merial, and Greg all nomming on his hair while Jim just sits there with a “WTF?” look on his face.
Well, it didn’t do Stanley the sea monster any harm!
Maybe that’s why Stanley is so big and strong today.
Yeeee! You’re Back! So exited to see what’s up with the cast again. Are you trying out some new shading techniques or just adjusting for candlelight? I like it either way.
Also, they’re apparently useing an ancestor’s skull as a candleholder…
Well what else are you to use them for
and besides it’s just best to keep such things in the family
Saw the first panel via tumblr, it took a second to realise that Michelle was not looking directly ahead/at the camera. Missed the launch of this arc, wonderful to see the comic back again.
Can I also say nice to see presumably electric lights instead of the typical tomb torch. Gets around the issues of smoke buildup in confined spaces.
Jim has given some illumination as to who two of the colours of candles could represent.
But there’s a third colour. Blue. Colin’s colour.
So who is the historical Finn the blue is for?
Red, green, blue: the secret of the Finns is that they aren’t griffins, they’re actually pixels.
All I can say is: if I had had a necropolis like that to play in when I was little, I surely would have. Interment sites are rarely haunted anyway, and even if this one was…
Ghost: Ahem. Madame Mary? Your little green wonder has got the door to my sepulchre stuck again – with himself inside.
Mary Finn: *eyeroll* Hasn’t my husband fixed the lock on that yet, Matilinda? …*sigh* I’ll be right down… *grabs crowbar*
I don’t understand the emoticon.
Goat smiley: horns – eyes – top of muzzle – mouth – beard
To do a smiley of Mary, I it think should be
Her pointy ears, glasses, muzzle, beak
I’m sorry, that looks phallic
He’s so PROUD about it. It’s all like, ” *proudly* PHINEAS THE GREEN.”
Why not? Knowing where your difference comes from can be a source of pride.
And, from Orientations chapter 1, we already know that Jim likes showing off his pride about his lineage.
Hey didn’t Michelle’s dad mention a “Phineas The Red” a while back in Orientations?
Yup, Found the page
whoops, sorry it’s issue-five-page-23 not 22
The Finns don’t really mind gender so much when naming their offspring, do they? If Jim had a sister, her middle name would probably be James as well.
Considering that in the recent branch levels of the Finn family tree
there’s Jimothy James, Timanda, and Timantha, the possibility of Jimantha James and Jimanda James showing up as names is not something to discount.
Yeah. I just noticed that too. It seems their families have the history between them.
Next time you do some character sketches, could you draw Phineas The Red? If those stonework carvings are to be believed, the guy’s hair must have looked pretty boss.
Do we know if any of the wall carvings actually are of Phineas the Red?
as excited as I am about the updates, I just want some answers, and all we are getting is more questions.
That’s always been how it goes here.
Kory gives us some info, and a few inferred clues from that, and then we start trying to put more of the puzzle together, asking more and more questions.
I just caught up yesterday, I was literally on the previous page when my friend who introduced me to this site told me it updated. Lucky me! my only disappointment is that now I have to wait for updates.
THE WITTY ALT TEXT LIVES!
I really missed Jim’s dorpy face
What is with the Finns and naming their children so strangely? Who names their daughter Phineas, Timantha, and Timanda, and their sons Jimothy and Paulbert?
I just really wanna see Michelle’s reaction to these names, though…
2nd panel, I just this (third time through, I think) time noticed the resemblance between Jimothy and Colin in Jim’s expression. Yep, they’re definitely brothers!
