Don’t worry boys, he’s not mad at you he’s just mad at the situation.

Cultural genocide at its finest
I think they may have taken it a little personally either way
I don’t blame them, with this reminding them of what they lost and had to sacrifice.
Neither do I honestly
Small prediction for next week’s page, Ike will clarify that he’s not blaming Manticores for their culture essentially being killed.
Bigger prediction for later in this chapter: Ike makes a case for Manticores to get medallions (Which is what I thought this interview was about when he met up with them earlier in the chapter)
They probably wouldn’t have been teasing him earlier or asked for a “bribe” meal if it had been about the opportunity to get medallions (which come with the opportunity to get better jobs and not go hungry anymore, move freely outside the Avalon, potentially less discrimination, basically a massive upgrade to their current living standards.)
Yes. If they have medallions, they can pass on written Manticorsh by hand, which means younger manticores can learn to write it with their tails.
The two older manticores learning to write by hand while Ike is learning to write with his tail will hopefully make the experience of being taught to write with his tail less shitty for Ike, as well. I feel like they are shouty teachers XD
I started reading this webcomic… oh, probably about five or six years ago, and immensely enjoyed it, though life got hectic and kind of disastrous, and three computers later I finally found it again and binge-read the entire thing the past two nights, and it is still as wonderful as it was the first time I started reading it. Honestly, from the first time he was introduced, Ike was a favorite character. It’s wonderful seeing him taking a decided interest into the other half of his history/genetics. I have to think this would piss off his mother immensely, and like Rhonda, I could sustain myself off of her anger. While the various murderous horses of mythology have always been a favorite, her species-ist behavior makes me delight in the thought of her being taken down a peg.
You know, something that’s never been clarified, what are the limits of magical healing?
Jimothy’s father never grew his wings back, and I don’t think it was ever implied to be possible.
“There just ain’t too many of us left. Why keep some language alive when there soon won’t be any of us to use it?”
Along the lines of not being welcome anywhere, being viewed with suspicion (warranted or not [these two don’t exactly ooze confidence towards the “will you behave?” -category])…
But I’m content with them acknowledging that there could be ways that they could preserve their legacy.
And do concede that it is likely due to some fatalistic view that their breed is simply done for…
This makes me wonder if there are female manticore? Biology-logic says there would have to be, but add magic-‘logic’ to the mix, and who knows?
Similar to what a whole lot of oppressed local cultures were told about themselves by their conquerors. As an example, Australian Aboriginal languages were often wiped out by that exact argument. They are slowly (very slowly) getting to the point where the remaining languages, myths, legends, histories (and yes, even cryptids!) are being re-remembered and recorded. It’s a process, and Ike is part of that process.
With how on-the-defensive Statler and Waldorf here got in the last pane, I’m hoping Ike clarifies that he’s angry at the situation (the lost of information and such), not at them.
I’m so confused about this reaction. Do most people think when upsetting news are shared and the receiver gets angry, that the receiver is mad at the messenger (assuming it’s not their fault)?
It’s a kind of self defense mechanism, especially for those who have spent a lot of time on the receiving end of outbursts and anger… tends to result in either apologizing and backing down, or getting defensively aggressive back at the person yelling — see the sudden sour, defensive and almost aggressive looks on their faces with Ike’s angry “why isn’t this recorded?!” style comment, and the defensive “Ain’t our fault” reply.
(As someone who spent a lot of time growing up with everyone’s favorite, “Oh, yeah, that was verbal abuse when I was growing up, huh…” reflections, I have a feeling for this kind of thing first hand…)
Yeah the Avalons really need to change how they run.
Just a note, in the previous page you can clearly see these twos spine and ribs. Seems that safe place to sleep has clear problems
“How many manticores are left that can write their own language?” That’s close, but the real question is “How many manticores are left?” With no medallions, and few avalons willing to take them in, I’d be surprised if there’s a thousand left in the wild, and odds are they are nearly extinct.
between this and rtts, my fave webcomics are hitting close to the cultural language death/diaspora angst for me. oooof
Did anyone else feel like Ike’s about to get a classic gay couples’ rant?
“Being a manticore does not obligate me to create baby manticores ‘for the future of our race.’ Piss off.”
If Ike can’t I will buy these two another lunch
So the Elders committing war crimes just to let the manticores live in the Avalon.
Such enlightenment.
War crimes by… NOT forcing them to preserve their heritage?
The situation sucks but it’s not a war crime.
Well,… I’d say the “crimes” he’s referring to (that’s causing this language to essentially go “extinct”) are essentially the crimes pertaining to the decimation of the manticore race due to modern “monster bigotry”, and the crime of the demand of “tail mutilation” to even allow them entry into this community (thus alienating them further by giving them little choice for entry except to have hacked off their only reasonable means of continuing use of their written language)… Ike’s perhaps exaggerating a bit here with his use of nomenclature, but these things, if applied to human refugees for instance, might fall into the category of “crimes against humanity”…
Classic confrontation between an older generation who felt forced to abandon their culture (often under duress) and a younger generation trying to recapture it. The young folk feel deprived and the old folk feel put upon by choices they felt they had to make.
Rock has always been one of my favorite characters.
