The Nix vary in looks from region to region, so you know it was quite a shock when they figured out that they’re all the same species.

Thanks for the answer! A nixie was one of my guesses, but I figured with the creepy feel of the creature, maybe poor Theodor had the misfortune of stumbling upon a bathing bugbear.
i suspect the finish näkki is also the same species
I just saw a lovely winged sphinx. It was the front part of an Achaemenid rhyton and beautifully detailed. It had a helmet like detail on the head and long horns. The wings were gilded and the curator (British Museum Curator Corner) said that it may have had a gold mane that could have been so thin that it would move. So do we get horned sphinxes? What would make a sphinx horned?
So I actually had to look this one up – wayyyyy back in Orientations, we got a glimpse of a “barbury lamb,” which is some kind of plant-beast? Adorable. (And not to be fed by customers, apparently.)
Are there other botanical cryptids in the Skin Deep world, like the cactus cat?
