manticores coming in blue when they’re normally salmony colored strikes me as similar to lobsters and crabs and i’m just accepting that as canon for them now
I think I missed something…Why are they both so thin? I know that manticores, without medallions, are considered monsters, but does that factor into their condition?
It’s been said in a reader question that they’re homeless because no-one really trusts them even after they amputated their poison tails; they busk for their food and go hungry a lot. Presumably why Ike was able to bribe them both with a good meal!
They’re thin becaus they’re malnourished.
They make all their money busking. They live on the outskirts of society. Ike buying them food here is probably the first hot meal they’ve had in years.
Monsters are not well regarded in this society. It’s been an undercurrent for a while.

That would be where the scorpion-like stinger was. Having it removed was probably a requirement for living in an avalon.
A previous QnA did mention that some Manticores do this to make other people more comfortable around them.

There seems to be enough variation in manticore depictions that there isn’t really a “standard” version. Common depictions include a scorpion tail and a pair of bat-style wings.
I would guess the blue color is probably a heraldic representation (whose?). I’m not aware of an agreed-upon “proper” (natural) coloration to default to, so they can be gold/yellow, silver/white, black, red, green, blue, or purple as specified.
Some gray colors are seen as bluish.
Oh I just noticed Stat and Wal both have light blue eyes – just like the original classical description of manticores! Ike’s blue eyes are probably from his father! What a fantastic detail.
The “original” mythology describes them as red (cinnabar- or blood-red) There is a hypothesis that they were inspired by tigers.

I’m torn between loving their dynamic and being furious with everyone in the Avalon for letting these poor bastards get to the point where I can SEE THEIR SKELETONS THROUGH THEIR FUR. The socialist in me is foaming at the mouth.

In one of the earlier Reader Questions it was confirmed that some manticores completely amputate their tails in order to be more acceptable to ‘civilized’ folk. They do everything in their power to appear less dangerous.
These two sound like an old married couple, and that’s what I’m rooting for~
I am beginning to understand why manticore lore is so hard to come by.
Ike’s cardigan got way darker in this page and stayed darker for later ones. I didn’t even notice until I went back to have a double check his tail’s design.
