SURPRISE! Twas Lily the whole time! Nobody suspects Lily Snodgrass! Because she has a magic talisman that makes people not notice her, specifically bugbears. Now I can stop pretending that she hasn’t been in the background of this scene the whole time. Do you remember Lily? If you need a refresher, she was last seen pranking Alec in The Bugbear Talisman!

Actually, rereading the Bugbear Talisman might be a good idea for this part of the story, considering it’s been…THIRTEEN YEARS??? Since that story ended?? That can’t be right. Webcomic Time, my one true villain…

Is Lily into Alec? I thought her prank war in “The Bugbear Talisman” had strong flirting overtones but that probably comes from watching way to many screwball comedies. Dean strikes me as more ‘accomplice’ than ‘boyfriend’.

Pretty sure Dean is just a friend… one that when asked “Why?” probably has to think a bit and just says “I dunno? We have just always been.”
I just think Lily has always been a prankster and, as such, has seen Alec… or Bugbears in general as the Holy Grail of her prank career. Pranking the all seeing is the ultimate challenge.

Hmmm… I thought it was mentioned somewhere that Bugbears did not show up on other Bugbear’s ‘radar’.
Was that wrong or is Alec just saying Kevin’s aura is so bad that he can usually still track him even though he is a Bugbear?
All that said, Kevin seems that that affable, goofy cousin that most of the family can’t help but like… but then there is usually that one person in the family who just can’t get along with them.

I actually didn’t clock Lily as Lily, as her skin tone seems to be a few shades lighter than her last comic appearance. Is there any particular reason for that?

Oh dang, you’re right. I was using color-picking and thought the differences were because of the overlay layers I was using, but no, somewhere along the line I had lightened her base skin color.

Thank you for pointing that out so I can fix it now before I get too much further into the scene!

I thought her midform was simply a skoshe closer to the human end of the spectrum this time. I would expect such a Scottish mytholo to have skin just as pale as a Scot when in human guise (unless the lore says otherwise).
Could that explain the apparent discrepancy?

I love how perfectly this particular page encapsulates the idea that it can be good to be anatomically inaccurate for the sake of expression- eyes on the same side, hair all wonky, wrinkles everywhere. This page would be far less interesting if everything were plumb.
