Honestly, at that point in time I’m sure anything vaguely leonine could convince some peasants that they were a sphinx.

Did any lizard or snake adjacent critter try the same with dragon ?
Umh. At the time where they still believed in the existence of dragons in the first place, the in-story humans should also have known that they were busy hunting them to extinction … “famous last words” comes to mind …
(… erm, European humans, that is …)
Being totally fair to the peasant, if he wants to live a long life it’s probably smart not to second guess the identity of a giant lion-creature to its face. Hopefully he gets out of the magic-scam mostly unscathed (only a doodle but I like him already, takes lot of courage to go looking for a sphinx!)
It’s not like the peasant could ask for credentials or be able to verify them if he had any. All your average peasent would have to go on “head of a man, body of a lion but has wings” so all he has to go on does check out.
Was scamming humans a more common practice in the past? What were/still are the most common scams?
A Lamassu? Hmm. What if he was a Llamassu (a lamassu with a llama for a head)?
I see that the number of questions in this batch is truly gross.
