2024 Reader Question 170

2024 Reader Question 170 published on 30 Comments on 2024 Reader Question 170

Webcomic recs!!!

3rd Voice by Evan Dahm: A fantasy world in the midst of an apocalyptic crisis.

Crossed Wires by Iris Jay: Hackers infiltrate and bring down a corporate conspiracy while wearing wild-ass virtual avatars.

Kill 6 Billion Demons by Abbadon: Allison has gotta kill those six billion demons.

Hmmm, there’s a running theme here of “comics with incredible character designs and visually cool settings” so maybe I’m not very subtle in my interests.

Well based on that short list, I want to recommend Ten Earth Shattering Blows. It’s got lizards! Lots of lizards! And cool characters.

A few more comics I like:
Phaedra needs to realize she’s been lied to all her life and she has to rescue the God of Death to save the world. But there’s a problem, she’s already dead.

Amarantha wanted to join the army and become a necromancer just like her mom. But she finds out it’s not as fun and glamorous as she thought it’d be? Who could have seen that coming?

Okay, it’s just a typical D&D party. The naïve young cleric, the grumpy veteran fighter, the cynical rogue… We’ve all seen that before. But it’s still so very charming! And the surreal dungeon environments are very cool.

And some light sci-fi to finish. A Star Wars-esque universe full of cool aliens and weird technology.

My comic recommendations would be “Daughter of the Lilies” “The Storm Stained” “Swords” “Vainglorious”, “White Noise”, “Sleepless Domain”, “Soul to Call” and “Unsounded” (though the last two require some eyebleach for gore and body horror, so I’d recommend them for more mature audiences.)

Been following Kill Six Billion Demons (KSBD for short) for a long time, it’s going to end soon (?) and I highly recomend reading it – just go to the beginning and you’ll have fun for a long time
Amazing art (remind me of Moebius in some parts), lots of plot twists and unforgetable characters (like Cio, pictured above)

Freefall, Girl Genius, The Whiteboard, Gunnerkrigg Court, Grrl Power, Two Kinds, How to be a Werewolf, Godslave, Skin Deep (naturally), Kill 6 Billion Demons, Savestate, Beyond the Western Deep, Scandinavia and the World…

And now Crossed Wires, which I just archive binged and why has the next button stopped working on the 2024-07-25 comic‽

Why, because that is the latest page, of course. Try https://www.badspacecomics.com/ for some patience training … ;-3

Cue Vader NOOOOOOOOOO

Getting to the end of an archive binge hurts, man.

I’m scared to click any more links or search titles. My webcomics bookmark folder is already replete, and the serialized content I consume is not entirely contained by that!

And god forbid I get pulled into another binge. I have a trip tomorrow. I need to get some things done and then sleep.

Anyone who likes complex plots should check out Kubera: One Last God on either webtoons or mangadex (mangadex has the better translations) it’s got a LOT of chapters, yes, but the story is just… Like you know how people hype up Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom for just how much thought went into planning it and how much detail is in there? Kubera is the webcomic equivalent of that. It also draws strongly on Hindu mythology.
The season 2 preview (it’s well into season 3, by the way!) may sum it up best: “This is a war with no villains, only victims. And in the end, someone will have to cry.

Gosh I really need to read Kill6 Bill demons, i keep hearing such good things about it.

The Finns are well established old-money. Do they have any petty rivalries with other Mythical families, whether well-to-do or not? i.e. Head Finn was slightly rude to a party guest at a Saturnalia get-together 300 years ago and the party guest’s family holds a grudge to this day, or something.

Kill 6 Billion demons is Incredible, and I try to recommend to as many people as I can interest in it. I’m glad to see it among your recommendations.
3rd Voice is also good, you should his other work “Vattu”, if you haven’t gotten to it yet, its excellent.

I gave up on Wildelife bc it had abuse of a certain type in it that got glossed over possibility bc of gender. It was really gross >.<

Can't recc Vattu/3rd Voice enough tho…!!! How to be a Werewolf, saaaame…abd omg those color palates…

Ooh Crossed Wires resumed updates! I’ll have to dive back into that one.

Most of mine are already mentioned in the comments, so I think only Yokoka’s Quest ( https://yokokasquest.com/ ) and The Last Dimension ( https://www.webtoons.com/en/sf/the-last-dimension/list?title_no=3174 ) aren’t covered. YQ is a wholesome romp of self discovery in a colorful original fantasy land, and Last Dimension is an early-homestuck sort with amazing graphics of young mildly superpowered children stranded on a distant planet.

Aurora by Red. A ragtag crew of heroes embark on a journey to rescue a god from an immortal witch, stop an eldritch dragon from breaking the world, and maybe even talk about their feelings once in a while.

Runaway to the Stars by Jay Eaton: a hard science fiction slice-of-life story focused on communication, accommodation, and everyday life in co-species spaces. The main storyline follows Talita, a centaur aerospace engineer and cross-species foster kid.

Girl Genius by Phil and Kaja Foglio: Mad science rules the world. Poorly. Surely it’s possible to clean the place up a bit…

Also, webnovel rather than comic, but…
Dragon Fleet by Zenith Zaraki: The story of a mildly-military pack of werewolf truckers and their dragon allies.
