I’ve fooled you all, this scene is actually about Ike being grumpy! I’m a literary genius.

honestly i like this better than the people speculating they’re auditioning for Medallions. it’s Ike trying to get in touch with his *other* roots, plus he’s preserving accounts about a group that are something of outcasts in the mythical creature society, thus no doubt very poorly represented in terms of studied culture and history.
i just hope these two aren’t jerking him around with the contents of the interview the way they seem to be regarding him getting the interview
Ike may be doing this interview for his own personal research, for the library (mentioned late in Illuminations, shown in the map), for the Avalon’s newspaper, or some combination of those. I’m guessing he’ll bypass the paper and give a copy of his notes to the library.
Hmm Love those names lmao
Did we get any scenes of these two actually doing a Statler and Waldorf routine?
I’m presuming neither is Ike’s father because he wouldn’t be so calm about it otherwise. Ike’s father is another candidate for sunglasses guy no one has mentioned yet. I suspect two years is too soon for Michelle to learn how to produce medallions. She might not even be back from Dis if time runs differently there.
I’d be here for that!
Unlikely. Ike’s father had been shape-shifted into human form in a similar way to Ophelia, Tony’s mother– a permanent, physical transformation. That’s how he could be born to two different species in the first place.
Cooooould be Mustache Man but at the time of his relationship with Ike’s mother both had been living as humans he had no relationship with any Avalons. Obviously he could have moved since then but given he turned human specifically because of how manticores are ostracized and how badly the relationship went when he revealed his true form I doubt he’d be in any rush to integrate back into Avalonian society, if he was part of one in the first place.
They actually are named Statler and Waldorf. Presumably after the Muppets, not after the hotels that the muppets were named after.
First-hand knowledge of manticore culture: “they’re jerks.”
They are called that. Their real names are apparently too hard for most people to pronounce, according to a reader question.
oh, that makes sense.
sadly, it’s too late for my brain to hear them with any other voices than doohoohoohoo
AUGH! The Grump has been activated! We’ve been bamboozled!
I was hoping this was the case!
I take it in the intervening time they got medallions that allow them to speak so they can finally interact with people and shape shift like everyone else with medallions
They were already capable of human speech. They don’t need a medallion for that, and given how manticores are generally treated would have already taken human guise to be in the Underground among such a thick crowd

Time for a grumpy interview.
well having three rows of sharp teeth, and a spiked tail were they can actually throw the barbs, Might have a large affect on their culture.
I wanna hear about Manticore culture. :) :)
@ KoryBing: Oh, you’ve done this in the comic before. This is the scene’s actual plot being established. Everything before now was effectively a mix of world-building & foreshadowing for things later in the chapter.
Foreshadowing is the mustached guy we saw wandering around. He’ll come up again sometime in the future of the chapter. World-building was things like the establishment of the underground bar receiving permission from the Avalon for humans to actually enter, and Anthony playing in a band for said bar.
…actually, is this how you like to start your chapters? I’m not certain, but I feel like a lot of your chapters have started with something innocuous that drew attention but wasn’t the focus of the chapter, only to transfer to the focus of the chapter a few pages later.
Let’s see… The first time I find anything similar is Exchanges, particularly the initial Handshakes portion. It changes focus every five or so pages, starting with Blanche bringing Anthony into Avalon for the first time. Then, the characters switch in rapid succession, going from Zech and Elise to Lorne and Jim and then back to Anthony and Blanche.
And I was wrong, that’s the only time I can actually see that happening at the beginning of a chapter. I’m still expecting us to get back to the mustached man in this arc of the story, if not later in this chapter.
“Mustached Man” is John. :) Lorne’s older brother, and the agent that gets outside gigs for some of the bands in the Avalon. He’s an established character, and probably has something to do with Michelle and the gang, since they’ve started hanging out with Lorne and are (as of last update) waiting for the Council of Elders to make a call on what to do with the world’s only known sphinx.
We see Jon on the page before this, sitting at one of the tables with Paul, so it can’t be him.
Nice haircut, Ike!!!
Are Wal a d Stat dating?? New headcannon.
I figured they were siblings, or even littermates, as they are so close, but dating is also an option.
This makes a lot more sense to me than medallions. I could be wrong, but I feel like Michelle’s ability to make medallions is going to be introduced with a bit more drama. That’s something that’s really going to upset the apple cart in the avalon, and I think that’s something Cory is going to want to show us, not just have us pop in later on. Granted, it’s been a year, but perhaps that’s how long it’s taken Michelle to be ready to start handing medallions out.
It’s possible that Mr. Sunglasses is Bloodcarver. If that is him, though, I feel like his presence (and regular status) may only be known to the crowd in the Underground. Because again, I feel like a bombshell like that (a dragon being loose in the Avalon) is something that’s going to come to a head in the comic proper. I could definitely see Tim and Abigail being willing confederates in any scheme Michelle has cooked up (especially if it might mean Abigail getting a medallion of her own).
He do an big sippy
Ayo this is happening on the same day my gmc searria rolled off the assembly line
I just noticed that Isaac is a sinister dude (left-handed). I’m sure that if I go back and look at Exchanges again, I’ll see him holding his screwdriver in his left hand.
I just checked, and he does most of his work with the screwdriver using his right hand. However, he does switch it over to his left hand partway through, so perhaps he’s ambidextrous.
