Hooboy, Alec got to see EXAAAAACTLY what he wanted to.

And what’s worse,…like any rage-baiting troll he approached in bad faith, pretended to be “just asking questions”, and then purposefully tried to pick at the specific things that would make their victim/prey lose their cool… A typical, sad version of every abuser/predator out there, with the only goal of essentially getting what they want, and satisfying some deep-seated cruel streak, despite the sorrow they cause others, all while trying to smugly show their version of what they think “superiority” looks like… Pathetic… I can almost guarantee he’s going to try to finish up with some form of,…”So this is the guy you want to entertain the humans? This is the guy you were considering for security instead of me?”… So gross… This is an amazing facet of this particular storyline because it digs SO WELL into the social mechanics behind this kind of petty behavior, regardless of the “fantasy” elements of the story… Assholes are gonna “asshole” in the same kind of ways throughout history… I wonder if one of the Uncles are going to try to intervene at some point? I gotta imagine that THIS kind of energy is surely going to attract their attention, bugbear talisman or not…

Next page: Tim&Abbie shoveling creepy crawlies out of the Underground to make room for themselves, much less anyone wanting to attend the party.

“Keep going, I think the level dropped three inches so far! We’ll be at the stairs’ landing in a couple hours at that rate!”

I think Alec’s impressed. That’s the shit eating grin of someone who’s been goading someone into losing it.

Willing to risk it all to prove himself right. In his eyes, he’s already lost his gig this year, might as well try to make the competition lose their spot, too, and reinforce his worldview, not thinking (or caring) it could just ban him altogether.

Are the arms behind Alec Alec’s, or Kevin’s? I was thinking K was doing this cool multiplication thing, but now I’m thinking they belong to A. (I suspect the action in the next panel will tell us but aaahhhh it’s a week awaaay XD)

This page is so amazing, btw…!!!

They’re Alec’s I’d say, they’re covered in spiders where Kevin’s are covered in centipedes

Aside from the question of spiders or centipedes, it’s anatomy. Kevin’s left hand is grasping Alec’s sweatshirt, and his right hand is out of sight behind him (probably poised to strike). Alec has his hands drawn back, with his elbows behind his back, as he prepares to strike with both hands. Also, Kevin has made himself bigger than Alec, and both of those hands are smaller than Kevin’s.

You know, one of the interesting things about webcomics comments is this whole real-time reaction to a narrative slowly unfolding (and speculating what is going to happen 5 seconds from now) (I’m not being derisive, it really is pretty fun)

Right now it seems some of us did cotton on to Alec essentially trolling Kevin into looking like the real troublemaker to watch out for (which…honestly feels like a low blow even for Alec. Like, dude. Good grief.); what this means is that Alec is willing to *look* like he legitimately cares about something just to get the upper hand, so it signals that even what *seems* to clue you into his interiority could just be bullshit. It’s an interesting little bit of ambiguity but also a very frustrating one, which sometimes *is* what the writing is going for.

But even this very vivid scene can be recontextualized by what happens next, yeah? Here, Alec’s got his little keratin knives out, which seems weird if he’s just goading Kevin into looking bad. Does he just not like looking weak even as he’s taking it on the chin? Did he not really plan this whole little gambit and is just really thriled to be able to drive Kevin into a frenzy just for the hell of it?

What a guy. Infuriatingly yet tantalizingly hard to figure out. Much like art itself, I suppose.

“Did he not really plan this whole little gambit and is just really thriled to be able to drive Kevin into a frenzy just for the hell of it?”

Have you paid attention to ANY of the bugbears in this comic? Especially Alec?

That is *EXACTLY* what they do, and Alec more than most.

The dishonesty displayed here puts his interactions w Ike at a different light. We knew he was lowkey trolling w the “monster” comment, and his “you have all the time” is dismissive both of Ike’s efforts to even have the interviews happen, and the value of a non bigbear culture.

cool that kevin seems to have a centipede affinity while alex has spiders! makes me wonder if each bugbear gets a chance to like, pick or vibe w a certain creepy critter, that becomes ‘their’ thing? can def see bugbears that would vibe w ‘scary’ insects, like wasps or worms or silverfish (even w moths – not exactly scary but could see a bugbear going all in on a deaths head hawk moth association). that being said it WOULD also be really neat to see that subverted, like certain bugbears who go all in on creatures that aren’t seen as traditionally ‘scary’ , like butterflies or ladybugs or honeybees (though there can be other benefits – maybe not best for scaring people but supernatural bond w honeybees can also lead to a thriving apiary buisness).

Though all of this is just conjecture. story is very tense can’t wait to see where it goes!
