Who the sphinxes trusted with medallions seems pretty arbitrary at this point.
Racism typically is, and it was made pretty clear that most of it was Fantasy Racism at work.
I was going to say ‘sphinx racism is a hell of a drug’ but even so I’m curious how the sphinxes decided who was and was not worthy of a medallion. I’m sure the metatextual reason is ‘Kory likes drawing these guys more’ but ‘literal omens of death get medallions while harpies just have to deal with it’ feels so bizarre.
I mean, barring dragons, I think it’s just harpies and manticores that we’ve seen in comic? Excluding species from the Americas/Australia that the Sphinxes didn’t know about, and certain Wonderlanders that seemingly didn’t exist at the time like bandersnatches.
Oh, and also Nemean lions originally, but then Jocasta made them medallions out of spite.
Honestly, harpies aside, it kind of seems like the Sphinxes just didn’t want to give medallions to any creature individually more powerful than them? And/or significantly dangerous to them?
Not sure why harpies didn’t though.
Have you ever done a capybara and a greater rhea? Swamp buppy and long birdy might make a fun combo hehehehehe
The World in Deeper Inspection has a female Black Shuck character shown this week too. A very different design with lots of teeth.

Anybody else think a comic artist who goes on “hiatus” and STILL delivers content even more often than the comic is pretty darn cool?
I just had the mental image of someone doing the medallion test and getting this of all things, “Huh, if you gave me a billion guesses I never would have guessed this.”
Barghests are my favorite! Now I can make my Skin Deep OC in peace of mind.
