It’s not a Gryphon Week but I couldn’t resist this prompt. It’s a Friend.

OMG SO CUTIES??? awwww i love him HES ADORABLE OH MY GODDD
as far as questions go, what neat mythological creatures/cryptids have you found out about recently?
Myself I recently found out about the Melmedas from Persian folklore, specifically from Hormuz Island. (You might have heard a lot about the Strait of Hormuz recently. It’s named after this island, found just off the coast from Bandar Abbas.) Basically a siren-like or mermaid-like creature, which looks like a beautiful woman as usual, but her legs are long scythe-like fishtails crossed like scissors which she uses to cut apart those who approach her.
*goes in for a hug and huffs the plumage*
Gnihihihi, my plan worked perfectly.
Well done!
Muppet gryphons are pretty awesome.
Besides comments, what other resources do you have for all these neat mythical creatures?
I remember watching the first episode of Sesame Street and the idea that these characters would still be current over half a century later is… far out, to use the vernacular of the time
…though the reality that I still remember watching that first episode after all these years means I probably shouldn’t be surprised by the longevity of these characters.
Ultimate friend shape.
We know that there’s a Church built for mythical beings, but what about farms? Where do they get enough meat to feed people without people outside the secret noticing a random black hole in the map that eats enough pork to support a country?
The “not my problem” effect.
Heck for a few years I lived in the boondocks about 2 miles from a house by the crossroads that was being used as a drive-through meth dispensary. Everybody within a 5 mile radius knew. Nobody did anything. Nobody blinked when it had a mysterious fire. No magic or hexes required.
As for the food supply. I know farmers and ranchers who would accept cash or even pay cash no questions asked for a group of odd folk to come and take all the feral or invasive hogs out of a region.
Yep. So long as the food is paid for, people won’t really notice that much. They’d notice robberies, sure. But if a commercial company is buying food and paying for it, all they’re going to do is occasionally ask if they want to expand or buy more, not ask where it’s going.
There’s a guy who comes up and shoots a deer or two every year up our way, and no one knew about him except the farmers he walks on the property of (deer are an introduced invasive pest species in Australia, he’s committing no crimes). And anyhow, farmers can always be normal, tax-paying farmers, but also be the odd folk in question on their own right on their own property.
i love him
Which griffins are the most likely to commit crime? Would they be working with or against each other?
The problem is that it’s a nightmare because we can only see the Big Bird part of this gryphon.
Mr Snuffleupagus is invisible to pretty much everyone…
Imagine that walking around now…
They made him visible in the early 80’s. I remember being mad that he couldn’t hang out for a few more minutes while Big Bird got someone to meet him.
Wasn’t that the episode with the heat wave, and also where Mr. Rodgers guest starred?
Unfortunately, the puppet/interaction parts of Sesame Street were always localized to the country it aired in.
Of course that meant proper interactability for the kids, but it also meant a lot of muppets got scrapped.
You would notice that figures like Oscar, Elmo, Bert and Ernie… they never showed up in the live parts of the street.
So while we in The Netherlands had a Big Bird (Pino) who walked the street and interacted with humans, in my youth he was only ever accompanied by Tommie (a dog) and Inieminie (a mouse; named derived from nursery rhyme)
Mr Snuffleapagous was to my memory never a staple for my experiences with the show and my memory of his ephemeral state was that only the likes of Elmo and Big Bird could really readily see him.

Did you know there’s a real snuffleupagus? It’s a sort of fuzzy seahorse.
