Could the dingmaul/ball-tailed cat of fearsome critters legend be perhaps nothing more than a mischiveous little manticore kitten?
Tail spike shape based manticore clans, their language differences would be subtle. Ike is clearly a spear clan, not a club clan.
It’s possible that the languages aren’t different, but just the script; like the difference between serif and sans-serif.
