I can imagine how the dragons reacted to humans development after their history of being hunted for sport.
WWI Happens
“Yeah, at this point we really aren’t going to reveal ourselves to humans. Way too dangerous.”
WWII Happens
“Yeah guys, we get it.”
Soviet and USA weapons testing during the Cold War
“OK, that’s enough.”
M47 Super-Dragon guided anti-tank missile developed
“Now you’re just rubbing it in.”

I’m following twitter-length short story author and yesterday they posted this story:

“You are a good being,” said the knight, “I do not wish to kill you.”
“Then go back,” said the dragon, “and tell all you did.”
“I’ll be known as a murderer!”
“Dragonslayer. Do it to keep me safe from others.”
“I see. Very well.”
“You are a good man, George.”

There is a similar story which has the dragon and the knight colluding to make their own people think they are a slayer of the other. You might have heard of the author, guy by the name of Tolkein, but he did probably get the original idea from his study of myths. Or from an Avalon.

A brave princess goes to rescue a distressed dragon from an evil knight.

… Now I want to read that, got any books like that (I think Jane the dragon had that concept… I’m too lazy to look it up.)

Try “The Enchanted Forest Chronicles”. It’s more of a case of the princess doesn’t want to be rescued by some brutish knight, so she keeps on sending them away so they don’t bother her dragon, but it’s pretty close and a very good read. It’s the kind of book where a princess might go to find a dragon because she can’t stand her princess lessons, or because the evil fairy that came to the party celebrating her birth had such a wonderful time that she decided not to lay a curse on her…

Yeeaaahh…… sorry about that. Would soft-serve ice cream and a love for dragons in modern fantasy help?

Would probably melt the ice cream and the bowl. dragon skin is supposedly as hot as the sun in some legends I have read.

At it’s coolest the sun is about 4000 degrees C. Even the most resilient of rock melts at 1200 degrees C. At that temperature the gasses surrounding the dragon would be turned to plasma.

Sent these on last Illuminations strip, bumping it.
How long is a Sphinx’s lifespan?
If a mythical have a longer lifespan in true form, hows does this apply when they’re on midform?

On your second question, I think the relevant point is whether they’ve turned, not what forms they display after getting a medallion.

On further thought, I think the timing of the Turning also matters. Comparing it to the Highlander TV show that some of you might remember from back in the 90s may be helpful. In the series, which was spun off from the movie, certain rare individuals were immortal, but didn’t know it, and aged normally until they died and woke up to their immortality, at which point they would suddenly stop aging.

Of course, no known mythics or cryptids are immortal. I’m just guessing that especially long-lived species age more slowly after gaining their medallions than before. So, an individual who grows old before turning may seem prematurely aged from the perspective of his peers.

I just remembered a limerick I wrote a while back:

There once was a Hero named Ray,
Whose business was Saving The Day;
He entered the lair
Of a serpent most rare,
And a dragon ate Hero Flambé.

There’s also an old filk song that I think is appropriate here.

“A dragon came to our village today,
we’d like him to leave but he won’t go away;
he talked to our king and they worked out a deal,
no homes will he burn nor stock will he steal.

Now there is but one catch that we don’t like a bunch,
twice a year he invites him a virgin to lunch;
we don’t have much choice so the deal we’ll respect,
but we can’t help but wonder and postureflect:

Do virgins taste better than those who are not,
are they salty or sweet or more juicy or what?
Do you savor them slowly or gulp them down on the spot,
do virgins taste better than those who are not?

Now you have good taste in women for sure,
they always are pretty, they always are pure;
but your idea of a good time, it makes us all flinch,
for your favorite repast is barbecued wench.

We’d like to be rid of you and many have tried,
but none can get through that thick scaly hide;
we hope that real soon a brave soul will come by,
we can’t wait around ’til you’re too fat to fly.

Do virgins taste better than those who are not,
are they salty or sweet or more juicy or what?
Do you savor them slowly or gulp them down on the spot,
do virgins taste better than those who are not?

We found a solution that works out so neat
if you’ll settle for nothing but virgins to eat;
No longer will our numbers grow small…
We’ll simply make sure we’ve no virgins at all!

Do virgins taste better than those who are not,
are they salty or sweet or more juicy or what?
Do you savor them slowly or gulp them down on the spot,
do virgins taste better than those who are not?
