Species that have the natural ability to shapeshift can shapeshift in various degrees. Some can turn completely into humans, while others can only change their shape a little bit. It depends on the species! Most European mythical creatures can’t shapeshift or can only shapeshift a little bit.

A common theme in myth is shapeshifting with restrictions, like Melusine who needs to go back to her natural form once in a while, or the selkies who literally shed their seal skin to turn into their human form and need to put it back on to turn back into their selkie form.
