Fun fact, grasshopper mice are the worst smelling animals I’ve ever handled. They made my field partner and I literally gag whenever one was in a trap (we were doing a mark/recapture study in Arizona). They beat out every weasel species I’ve worked with and even smelled worse than the stinkiest skunk. I’ve done necropsies on rotting critters that made me gag less.

I live in the Sonoran Desert, and yup, Grasshopper Mice are real things. I hear one of the local coyote communities waking up at sunset every night (first they howl, then they all yip, then they go silent and hunt), but if Grasshopper Mice were suddenly the size of coyotes I’d move to an island somewhere; they do not play around.
