Greg is being her best cheerleader right now and I’m living for it. Also she DID make Bloodcarver a medallion! I wonder if he is, in fact, the mysterious man from earlier in the chapter!

Absolutely, his coat has the same pattern as his back or chest scales. The mustache fits his nose fringe thingies.

Huh, I had assumed he was Jonathan, Lorne’s brother because of the mustache, but now that I’ve looked back at the character list, I realize that Jon’s hair is brown whereas the mystery man’s is more reddish.

My wonder is if he’s a manticore – specifically Ike’s father, maybe? Due to the juxtaposition of him hanging out while Ike interviewed Statler and Woldorf, and the reddish tint to his hair. BUT if that’s the case then it wouldn’t have been Michelle who made a medallion for him.. which would raise the question of who else could have. All ‘if’s, but mystery man is so sus.

Greg’s a good egg. :3

It’s interesting because I do talk to myself like Michelle is talking to herself here but having an outside perspective on it, it’s almost egotistical right?
“yeah sure maybe you’re impressed by me but i could be way better”
“I could do way more than what I have already done, even if what I’ve done was monumental by your standards”
idk it sucks! brains are mean

Same. Classic symptom of depression and I’m prone to it. It has stalled me for literal years in the past.

It took too far too many years for me to learn this. I’m an old man now by most objective measures. But I have learned an important thing: Depression is just depression. I may feel bad about myself but that’s not reality.

That’s just the shape of my shadow.

I look in the mirror and I start counting memories of all the times Bad Brain was wrong.

I remember being pessimistic and feeling worthless and stalling for literal years about things that turned out to be easy when I finally did them.

I remember that I’ve have helped people more than I’ve hurt them. I remember that I’ve been a good friend to people I care about. I remember that I have empathy, and no will to be mean or hurt people, and although that may be a low bar I clear it and some folks don’t.

I remember that I’ve done things a lot of people can’t. I have degrees and patents and awards on the wall that say I’m not as worthless as I feel.

And then there are bad memories. I remember letting love go because I felt that I didn’t deserve it. I remember making sacrifices that didn’t help anyone because I felt like the gesture was more important than I was. I remember wasting time and life feeling sorry for myself while broke and unemployed.

All because Bad Brain is usually wrong about these things.

But it took me too many years to learn this, and it took me too many years to gather and start realizing the value of those memories. The memories are precious, even the bad ones, because they teach me who I am.

So get on with life and gather memories of your own.

I hope this helps. It seems likely that it won’t, but that may just be a symptom of Bad Brain. And I have learned that I have to work through my pessimism, or I don’t get things done.

If one may digress from the awesomeness of Greg, Michelle’s notes bring up some interesting questions. The presence of the cathedral clearly shows that the Avalon has been there since medieval times. But though Liverpool was founded around 1200, according to Wikipedia it was an unimportant backwater untill the late 17th C. This raises an interesting possibility: That the Avalon may have been (part of) the reason for the rise of the town (it’s at least less unsavoury than the official reason, that it rose due to the African slave trade)

Keep in mind that a medieval-looking building, especially one that’s a probable former church, isn’t necessarily medieval. I lived in Germany for a few years and spent a lot of time in the UK, and there are SO many churches that date back no further than the mid-to-late 1800s that were deliberately built as much in an older style as any Gothic folly. Some are really beautiful, too.

Me, I keep wondering what happened in and to the Avalons during the Blitz. And to the nonhumans during WWI & WWII, for that matter.

IIRC, somebody with local knowledge posted a while back that the modern Liverpool waterfront, including the tobacco warehouse, is built on “reclaimed” land — that is, filled-in swamp or river. That would imply that the Avalon and its cathedral used to be somewhere upslope from the current location.
So, they apparently relocated at least once, all without the mundane neighbors noticing. When the warehouse became available, they moved into its shell. Did they accomplish the big move in gradual, stealthy steps, or in one swell foop?

She’s chilling out a bit. Those pupils have faded again.

Your word choice triggered my flypaper mind to spit out a musical memory, and I checked my collection. The album “License To Chill” was released by Jimmy Buffett (and Friends) in 2004. The title song was recorded with Kenny Chesney.
And, yes, I’m the same parrot-head who looked at the teaser page for Illuminations and thought, “Finns to the left, Finns to the right…”
